Overview
The Young People’s Project (YPP) was founded in Jackson, Mississippi in 1996 by former Algebra Project students and current AP students at the Brinkley Middle School. YPP has grown in the spirit of the work of C.C. Bryant, Amzie Moore, Fannie Lou Hamer, June Johnson, Ella Baker, Bob Moses and many others and students from Jackson have inspired and supported the expansion of YPP to cities throughout the country.
At all sites, YPP Mississippi focuses on Flagway (categorization, prime numbers, prime factorization, algebra forms of numbers, number theory). In addition, Lincoln Garden participants were introduced to ITEST computer games developed by the MLWs. YPP implements workshops 2 days/week for 2 hours a day.
In addition to afterschool programming, YPP-Jackson prides itself in offering Saturday workshops and with financial support from our new partner, United Way, we will be able to continue to provide ten Saturday Literacy workshops for three hours each day that consist of YPP math content, and reading, and writing in relation to Common Core State Standards with the support of a teacher resource at Brinkley Middle School.
In addition to developing high school students as MLWs, YPP will extend its teaching/learning to their HS students with assistance in at-level math. YPP Mississippi currently works with 20 Math Literacy Workers (MLWs).
90% of participants from YPP Saturday workshops in Mississippi improved math scores from one term to the next based on their report cards. (2015)
